Building and Fortifying Relationships in Youth Groups

Salesian Youth and Animators’ Gathering (SYnAG) 2017

Makati City, the Philippines, 22 July 2017—More than 300 youth leaders and animators gathered at the Joy Center of Don Bosco Technical Institute, Makati for the first formation program organized by the Salesian Youth Movement for 2017. The first Salesian Youth and Animators’ Gathering (SYnAG) became a venue for the leaders and animators of 22 Salesian settings and two settings with SYM-affiliated groups to come together to “let their light shine” (cf. Mt. 5:16). It was a half-day activity where the leaders and animators were given a common formation workshop and an opportunity to meet and benchmark with their counterparts from the different settings.

In line with the SYM’s mission of providing opportunities for the continuous development of its leaders, two young missionaries—RJ Moriones and Sabrina Gasgonia of the Live Pure Movement shared their insights on ‘How to be Single and Happy.’ The talk gave a gentle reminder to the young leaders that they need not rush into relationships. They were affirmed that being single is not an impediment but a blessing. The talk gave the Salesian youth leaders an insight to the relationship that truly matters in their life. It also provided the boost they needed to continue in their service of leadership and animation in their groups and local communities.

Right after the plenary session, the Salesian leaders and animators met by youth groups to finalize the roster of their provincial council for the year 2017-2018. The election of each group’s provincial council was crucial in forming the Salesian Youth Movement – FIN’s Coordinating Council, the team that comes together to plan the movement’s next big steps. Each group also discussed their best practices in their respective settings. This serves as a way of benchmarking to check that the groups stay true to their nature.

The first SYnAG for School Year 2017-2018 was truly a success. All these were made possible thanks to the Salesians, youth leaders, and animators who gave their untiring support and invaluable contributions to the Salesian Youth Movement.
